On Thursday June 27, 2024, the Board of Selectmen held their monthly meeting at Town Hall.

We found the following items of interest:

Under "New Business" of the minutes, First Selectman Fred Camillo (R) Didn't appear happy with David Wold's request to raise the Canadian flag and immediate asked if he had crossed all his T's and dotted all his I's. Selectwomen Rabin and Stone McGuigan did not appear to have any real issues with this request. After a brief exchange, the request was ultimately passed unanimously after Rabin made a motion to accept and Stone McGuigan seconded the motion.

Mr. Wold is a Veteran and Greenwich resident.

b. Request to raise the Canadian national flag for Canada Day on July 1.

Town resident David Wold spoke via Zoom and said he had put forth the details in an email to the Board and he was looking for approval under the Town flag policy. First Selectman Camillo said at first this was something that could wait two weeks for a vote but Selectwoman Rabin noted Wold’s request was for July 1 and it made it time sensitive. Camillo asked Wold when he sent his first email on it and noted he had not submitted it within the 30 days called for under the Town’s flag policy. Wold said he was not sure but it was his interpretation that under the Town flag policy did not need a 30 day period for submitting a request to fly a flag. Camillo noted for many years prior the Town had only raised eight or nine flags and this year Wold had made close to a dozen requests with seven of them being approved. He said that Wold’s behavior had become “a joke” and “nobody appreciates it.” Camillo said this is why towns like Darien had policies only allowing the US, Connecticut and town flags and noted that they had gotten requests from others in Town that were “clearly way beyond the scope of the flag policy.” Camillo noted it was Wold’s responsibility to provide the flag, remember the date and set up the event. He said he was okay with voting on it and said he loves Canada and has lots of relatives there. Camillo said, though, that Wold violates the flag policy repeatedly and his patience was wearing thin.

Keep in mind, the Board of Selectmen had absolutely no issue keeping the pride flag raised for thirty days.

Also, under "New Business" of the minutes. The upgrade of American Legion Post 29 building:

c. Discussion on proposed community efforts for fundraising to improve the American Legion Post 29 building.

Town resident Linda Whitridge said she was there on behalf of the veterans from Post 29 as well as a group of patriotic teenagers led by her daughter Ella. She said the group wants to raise money for the Legion and “give back to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and honor all those veterans.” Whitridge gave a brief history of the building and said everyone agrees it needs an upgrade. She acknowledged that First Selectman Camillo had tried unsuccessfully on multiple occasions to get the money through the Town budget for this but it had been deferred so she wanted to see what could be done privately as a first step to do painting and electric work and other upgrades. Whitridge said she believed “can make a real difference to the veterans” and it would be a sign of what could come with future Town funding for the Post headquarters, which is a Town building leased to the Legion. She called it a great example of a public/private partnership and was looking for the Board of Selectmen’s approval of the initial phase. First Selectman

Camillo said “yes, yes and yes” to her request and said a good way to move forward was to set up a meeting with Town Superintendent of Building Construction and Maintenance Luigi Romano and the group of interested teenagers.
