On Thursday, August 8, 2024, the Board of Selectmen held their recent meeting.

Of interest:

4. ...Selectperson Stone McGuigan said she had of lot of pictures to share but did note that the part of their vacation to Jasper National Park “went up in flames” because of wildfires that closed the park and burned down parts of the town. She said she was so grateful there was no loss of life and that Greenwich did not face a risk like that. Stone McGuigan said she was looking forward to the celebration on Aug. 19 to mark the Marquis de Lafayette’s visit to Town in 1824. Stone McGuigan noted that this time of year is a great time to catch up on summer reading and she noted Greenwich Library’s choice of James, which is a retelling of Huckleberry Finn from Jim’s perspective, for its Greenwich Reads Together program.

7. New Business:

c. Request for approval of revised language for ordinance to ban traveling acts from using specific wild animal species within the Town of Greenwich. First Selectman Camillo said this had already been vetted and discussed weeks ago and had previously been approved by the Board of Selectmen. But he wanted to make sure the specific language was in place before it was sent to the RTM. Town Attorney Barbara Schellenberg said there was additional language that had to be added based on what was approved by the Board previously to reflect a suggested change that would state the regulations would not affect any act traveling through Greenwich where an animal needed medical care. She suggested adding language into section 4145 “Prohibition” to put in an additional subsection (which would be number 3) stating, “This section shall not prevent any animal that is traveling through the Town of Greenwich from receiving necessary veterinary care.” She said she believed that would cover what the Board wanted to indicate in the ordinance. Camillo said he personally did not think the additional language that had been suggested was needed because it was already clear that the Town would allow for medical care for animals and there was nothing in the ordinance that would prevent it. But he figured it would not hurt at all to include and if it made people in Town more comfortable with the ordinance he was all for it. Camillo said because the item had already been discussed and this was just a language clarification he felt they could proceed to a vote and send it to the RTM. Selectwoman Rabin made a motion to approve the revised language and the ordinance to ban traveling acts from using specific wild animal species within the Town of Greenwich. It was seconded by Selectperson Stone McGuigan and was approved unanimously.

8. Public comment period:

Town property owner Laureen Taylor spoke and requested changes to the July 11 Special Meeting minutes to reflect her presence attending the meeting. She also requested a formal denial in writing on a letter of her FOIA request for information about a potential candidate for the Historic District Commission. Taylor said she wanted to know if that candidate, named John Nelson who had been nominated earlier in the meeting for an alternate spot on the HDC, was the same one she had found biographical information for online. Taylor said she wanted to know whether he had knowledge, interest and expertise on matters that concern historic sites, monuments and buildings that memorialize veterans of the US military, members of the blue-collar class related to Byram and historic cemeteries. She said she did not believe anyone on the HDC met those criteria.
