Wold: Did We Lose a Valuable Piece of Parkland?
Submitted by David C. Wold, Greenwich Resident and Veteran
Have we
"lost" a valuable piece of parkland to the town population in
Langan's survey of what was donated for the rink purposes and today is Eugene
Morlot Memorial Park?
Langan's April 2021 survey clearly eliminated a very important piece of land, namely the pedestrian walkway to the donated rink property and the park as a whole!!!
It has been
difficult to find out when exactly the walkway was installed, but records show
that the public has entered the old Byram school property for over 100 years
from the north-north east. In building western middle school and Western Jr.
Highway the only entrance ended up being via McKinney Terrace and the pathway.
But we now see that Board of Selectmen's approval of Langan's survey, of which, the pathway is no longer a part of the named park, after 40 years of being there for one reason, welcoming the local and visiting public to the Dorothy Hamill Rink.
It is the only piece of land, and has been the only location for a "Welcome" Sign to this Town of Greenwich Recreational Park, for the last 40 year.
November 2023 pre-application documentation clearly shows Town rink property covers the walking path entrance from WMS. Somehow, that very important "real estate" that includes DPW's sign, appears to be outside what Board of Selectmen approved, "named" as Eugene Morlot Memorial Park, and now is part of "Western Jr. Highway" property, 70 years after BOE donated that parcel of the 100 year old Byram School property, for a town rink only (not part of Western Jr Highway) with the very important entrance way.
So DPW no longer needs to maintain or make ADA accessible, etc??? More importantly, include same in the rink property MI application, just because it is no longer part of EMM Park???
