RTM Districts: Vacancies Yes, Transparency No
If you’re interested in serving your community, here is your golden opportunity. The Representative Town Meeting (RTM) is the non-partisan, elected and sworn 230 member legislative body of the Town. The full RTM meets every month with several months off with each RTM district meeting monthly as well. Members may be assigned to committees that report back to the entire RTM. It’s an interesting experience that includes getting to know local government and the operations more intimately and the chance to meet other fellow Greenwich residents who serve beside you representing your district constituents. In the case of these vacancies, potential RTM members are elected by fellow District RTM members to finish the remaining term of the previous member.
While we
always encourage residents to be aware of how their government operates and even
get involved, we find something a little peculiar: lack of transparency.
If you look hard enough, you will see the public notices indicating the current RTM vacancies on the Greenwich town website. As you click on the “RTM” and each district, they make no mention of who has stepped down and the reason. In fact, we spent quite a bit of time researching media. While they did report on the vacancies, they failed to mention the information that we were looking for and by extension, the residents in Town.
What is the
big secret?
We have also heard that residents have tried on multiple occasions to fill vacancies in the past to no avail. Quite discouraging. Why?
