Greenwich Communities, formerly the Greenwich Housing Authority, is a Town organization that provides affordable housing options to low-income residents in the Town of Greenwich, Greenwich Communities manages several housing complexes and works to ensure that all residents have access to safe, clean, and affordable housing options. The authority serves as a key resource for individuals and families in need of housing assistance, and plays a crucial role in addressing issues of homelessness and housing insecurity in the Town.

One of the key functions of Greenwich Communities is to administer various housing assistance programs, such as the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program. This program helps low-income individuals and families afford housing in the private rental market by subsidizing a portion of their rent payments. The authority works closely with landlords to ensure that eligible participants are able to find suitable housing that meets their needs.

In addition to managing housing assistance programs, Greenwich Communities also owns and operates several affordable housing developments throughout the town. These developments provide a range of housing options, from one-bedroom apartments to larger family units. They are responsible for maintaining these properties and ensuring that they meet all necessary health and safety standards.

Greenwich Communities also plays a key role in advocating for affordable housing policies at the local, state, and federal levels. The authority works closely with other housing advocates and community organizations to raise awareness about the need for affordable housing in Greenwich, and to push for policies that promote fair and equitable access to housing for all residents.

One of the key goals of Greenwich Communities is to help residents achieve housing stability and improve their overall quality of life. The authority provides supportive services to residents, such as financial counseling, job training, and access to social services. These services are designed to help residents address any barriers they may face to securing and maintaining stable housing.

In addition to providing affordable housing options, Greenwich Communities also works to promote community development and revitalization in the town. The authority partners with local businesses, non-profit organizations, and government agencies to promote economic development, improve neighborhood safety, and enhance the quality of life for residents.

In a March 7, 2024 Greenwich Time article, Sam Romeo, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of Greenwich Communities, reflected on the future of affordable housing in Greenwich. Romeo commented on Connecticut’s 8-30g statute stating, "Let's stop the madness with overdevelopment. We want to keep the green in Greenwich. We want to take the hammer out of the hands of developers, and we believe we can do that. "I don't want to see that kind of development in the Town of Greenwich, and I think most of you don't want to see high-rises in the Town of Greenwich,"

Greenwich Communities also prioritizes sustainability and green building practices in its housing developments. The authority works to reduce energy consumption, promote recycling and waste reduction, and use environmentally-friendly building materials in its properties. By incorporating these practices, they seek to create healthier, more sustainable communities for residents to live in.

Overall, Greenwich Communities plays a vital role in addressing issues of affordable housing and homelessness in the town of Greenwich. Through its housing assistance programs, supportive services, and advocacy efforts, the authority helps to ensure that all residents have access to safe, affordable housing options.
