Hard Not To See All the Red Flags

Greenwich Schools Superintendent Dr. Toni Jones

The Superintendent of Schools in Greenwich is a prominent educational leader responsible for overseeing the school district and ensuring high-quality education for all students. Currently holding this position is Dr. Toni Jones. This individual holds a crucial role in the community, working closely with administrators, teachers, parents, and students to ensure that the district's goals and objectives are met.

The Superintendent of Schools is typically a highly experienced and qualified individual with a background in education, administration, and leadership. They are responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the district, setting educational goals, and implementing policies to improve student achievement. This individual works closely with the Board of Education to develop strategic plans and allocate resources to support student learning.

The Greenwich Board of Education oversees the Greenwich Public Schools to include the Superintendent’s position and other subordinate positions. The Board is comprised of eight elected members from both political parties, who meet publicly each month to discuss and debate operations, budget, facilities management, standards and other relevant items.

One of the key responsibilities of the Superintendent is to advocate for the needs of students and ensure that they receive a high-quality education. This involves working with teachers and staff to create a positive learning environment, implementing effective instructional methods, and providing support for students with diverse needs. The Superintendent also plays a vital role in building partnerships with parents, community organizations, and businesses to support student success.

In addition to overseeing the academic program, the Superintendent is also responsible for managing the district's budget, securing funding, and making decisions about staffing and resources. This individual must have a strong understanding of educational finance and be able to make strategic decisions to support student learning while maintaining fiscal responsibility.

The Superintendent also plays a critical role in ensuring compliance with state and federal laws and regulations related to education. This individual must stay informed about changes in education policy and legislation, and work to implement these changes in a way that benefits students and supports the district's goals.

In order to be successful in this role, the Superintendent must possess strong leadership and communication skills, as well as a deep understanding of educational issues and trends. This individual must be able to work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders and build consensus around important decisions that impact students and the community.

Dr. Jones' tenure as Superintendent has been fraught with contorversy, of which the most recent is the newly hired Eduardo Calderon as Principal of Julian Curtiss Elementary School. It appears Mr. Calderon has a less than stellar qualification to be appointed to the position.

In 2022, Republicans called for Dr. Jones and her Deputy Superintendent Ann Carabillo to be placed on administrative leave after a video went viral online of Project Veritas, working undercover, recrording then Cos Cob Elementary School Assistant Principle Jeremy Boland, remarking about his hiring practices showing discrimination against Catholics, Conservatives and individuals over the age of thirty for teaching positions.

On Wednesday, March 20, 2024, in the early morning, a lockdown was initiated at Western Middle School. Reports stated that a 19-year-old male, a former student at Western Middle School, gained entry to the school through the front door while students were being dropped off and proceeding to their destinations within the school. The subject, after entering the doors unchallenged, made his way to the 7th grade bathroom and remained there until he was discovered and shortly thereafter was apprehended by Greenwich Police.

This is not the first occurrence at WMS. On February 24, 2024, WMS initiated a brief shelter in place protocol when a visitor forgot to sign at the front desk upon being granted access into the facility. Again, once entry is gained and unless the person walks over to the office voluntarily to sign in, there is nothing to stop them from proceeding to other areas of the school.

Dr. Jones has repeatedly stated that Greenwich Public Schools does not follow or employ a woke agenda. However, the Greenwich PTA Council, which has its own dedicated page on the GPS webiste clearly promotes this agenda and by externtion GPS supports this position.

Parents and students have found inappropriate materials and books within the Greenwich Public Schools libraries. While administrators keep denying they exist or are unsure how these books make it to the library shelves, it appears the book review process is broken. In one case a book titled, "Choked" was founfdon the shelf at the Greenwich High School Shelf.

There are other controversies that continue to surround Dr. Jones' leadership. Greenwich parents are very concerned about educational standards. However, when you look at the list below, you have wonder which priorities are actually being implemented.

This list in not all-inclusive. Below are other controversies that Dr. Jones is having difficult with:

Soil remediation at Western Middle School.

The ballooning cost of building the new Central Middle School.

Declining academics and below average reading/writing levels while the Town, with each passing budget year, outspends other schools districts per pupil costs.

Old Greenwich Elementary School Project.

Overall safety and security of all school facilites.

Overall, the Superintendent must be a dedicated and passionate leader who is committed to providing a high-quality education for all students in the district. This individual plays a crucial role in shaping the future of education in the community and ensuring that students have the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in the 21st century.

The Board of Education will soon be voting on whether or not to extend Dr. Jones' contract. Parents and residents are encouraged to contact the Board of Education and ask that the bar be raised in all aspects of Greenwich School academics and leadership. Our children deserve a quality education.

By all appearances, we're not getting the best for our children.
