High Cost of Living in Lower Fairfield County

Lower Fairfield County, Connecticut is known for its affluent communities, proximity to New York City, and high quality of life. However, one downside of living in this desirable area is the high cost of living. From housing prices to groceries to healthcare, residents of lower Fairfield County face some of the highest expenses in the country.

Housing costs in lower Fairfield County are particularly high, with median home prices well above the national average. In towns like Greenwich, Westport, and Darien, it is not uncommon to find million-dollar homes that are considered average or even below average in size. The competitive real estate market in this area drives up prices, making it difficult for many residents to afford to buy or rent a home.

Beyond housing, everyday expenses such as groceries, transportation, and utilities are also significantly more expensive in lower Fairfield County compared to the national average. Prices for staple food items, gas, and electricity can be as much as 20-30% or more higher in these affluent communities. This can put a strain on household budgets, especially for middle and lower-income families who may already be struggling to make ends meet.

Healthcare costs in lower Fairfield County are also among the highest in the country. With the area being home to several world-class hospitals and medical facilities, residents have access to quality healthcare but at a steep price. Insurance premiums, doctor visits, and prescription medications are all costly, making it tough for some residents to afford necessary medical care.

One major factor contributing to the high cost of living in lower Fairfield County is the strong job market and high demand for skilled workers. Companies in industries such as finance, technology, and healthcare are willing to pay top dollar for employees with specialized skills and experience. This drives up salaries and attracts professionals from all over the country, further increasing competition for housing and driving up prices.

The high property taxes in lower Fairfield County are another significant expense for homeowners in the area. Towns in the region often have some of the highest property tax rates in the state, with residents paying thousands of dollars each year to fund schools, infrastructure, and other public services. While these taxes help maintain the high quality of life in lower Fairfield County, they also contribute to the overall high cost of living.

For residents who are not able to afford the high cost of living in lower Fairfield County, there are limited affordable housing options available. While some towns have programs to assist low-income families with housing, the demand for affordable housing far exceeds the supply. This can lead to long waiting lists and a lack of options for those in need of affordable housing. Let’s not also forget that Connecticut legislators have shoved 8-30g down our throats.

The high cost of utilities continues to skyrocket in the state. This trajectory is expected to continue under Democrat majority control, particularly with their “green” agenda. However, while State Senator Ryan Fazio (R) continues to tell us that he’s making progress on “saving” Greenwich (and Connecticut), the wallets of residents tell a whole other story.

Vote with your wallets this November and make it clear that political promises mean nothing unless they are actually acted upon.
