The Greenwich BOE is Need of an Overhaul: Greenwich Parents Have the Opportunity To See It Happens

No doubt many of you have heard of the unfolding saga between the Greenwich Board of Education and First Selectman Fred Camillo (R). The dysfunction of these two political entities, and by extension the Republican Town Committee (RTC) and Democrat Town Committee (DTC), is beyond outstanding, even to the point where legal action is now taking place in court, wasting time and taxpayer dollars. This dysfunction has been going on for quite a bit of time. Rest assured, this legal wrangling has nothing to do with who is the most qualified to be on the Board or the quality of your children’s education. Rather, this is contest of who can usurp the most power and which cronies are rewarded with a seat to the BOE, along with other town offices. With few exceptions, the current member makeup is comprised of establishment type political “friends” of what some might call the “Old Guard.’

The Greenwich Board of Education is comprised of eight (8) members, four (4) Republicans and four (4) Democrats elected every two (2) years in odd numbered election cycle years. What the BOE is in desperate need of is common sense, fiscal responsibility and a desire to give our children the best education possible. All this without a woke, incompetent, ego driven and fiscally irresponsible Superintendent of Schools. If you’re a Greenwich parent, we strongly encourage you to consider running for the BOE in 2025 and be the change the BOE desperately needs.

Parents play a crucial role in the education and development of their children, and one way they can further contribute to the improvement of their child's education is by running for the Greenwich Board of Education (BOE). The BOE is responsible for making important decisions that directly impact the quality of education and the overall school experience for students in the town. Parents who are actively involved in the BOE have the opportunity to advocate for good, common-sense policies and initiatives that benefit all students, including their own children.

By running for the BOE, parents can bring a unique perspective and firsthand experience to the decision-making process. As parents, they have a vested interest in the success of their children and can provide valuable insights into the needs and concerns of students and families within the community. Their perspective can help ensure that the policies and initiatives implemented by the BOE are responsive to the diverse needs of students and are effective in improving educational outcomes.

Additionally, parents who serve on the BOE can be powerful advocates for increased parental involvement in education. Research has shown that parental involvement is a key factor in student success, and parents who are actively engaged in their child's education can make a significant impact on their academic achievement. By serving on the BOE, parents can promote and support initiatives that encourage parental involvement, such as parent-teacher partnerships, communication strategies, and community engagement.

They also help to ensure that the interests of students and families are prioritized in decision-making processes. They can advocate for policies to support initiatives that create a safe and supportive learning environment for all students. By actively participating in the BOE, parents can use their voice and influence to shape the educational experiences of all students in the community.

In addition, parents who serve on the BOE can play a key role in promoting transparency and accountability in the education system, which is an important goal every BOE member should be striving for, and Greenwich residents and taxpayers expect. They can ensure that decision-making processes are fair and equitable, that resources are allocated effectively, and that schools, teachers and staff are held to a higher standard and are accountable for student outcomes. By being actively involved in the BOE, parents can help to build trust that is desperately needed and confidence in the education system to ensure that the needs of students and families are being met.

Potential BOE members have the opportunity to help to bridge the gap between our schools and the broader community. They can serve as liaisons between the BOE and parents, students, teachers, and community members, helping to facilitate communication and collaboration among all stakeholders. By fostering strong relationships and partnerships, parents can create a sense of unity and shared responsibility for the success of the education system in their community.

Furthermore, parents who serve on the BOE can bring valuable skills and expertise to the table that can benefit the entire Greenwich school district. Whether they have backgrounds in education, business, law, or other fields, parents can contribute their unique talents and perspectives to the decision-making process. Their diverse experiences and knowledge can enrich discussions, prompt innovative solutions, and ultimately lead to better outcomes for all students.

Additionally, parents who run for the BOE can gain valuable leadership experience and professional development opportunities. Serving on the BOE can provide parents with the chance to develop their skills in communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and decision-making, as well as the opportunity to network with other education professionals and community leaders. This experience can be valuable not only in their role on the BOE but also in their personal and professional lives. Ultimately though, the rewards reaped are all about the best outcomes for our children.

Though the process of earning a seat on the BOE is political through the municipal electoral process, BOE members should never use our children as political pawns. Their best interest is always first and foremost.

Parents, here’s your grassroots opportunity to raise the educational standard in Greenwich.
