Greenwich Needs Sensible Republican BET Members
Greenwich, Connecticut is a great place to live, work and raise your children. For many of us who have lived in Town for any length of time, we know Greenwich is like no other place offering great amenities such as parks and beaches, good schools and vast resources. One advantage Greenwich has over other cities and towns in the state is we have one of the lowest, if not the lowest mill rate. Keeping out taxes low is a huge reason why Greenwich continues to be a desired location. While we as residents and taxpayers need to fund many of these services, we also do not want our Board of Estimate and Taxation (BET) to raise taxes and the mill rate because a certain segment of the population says so.
Democrats want to spend more of your money, especially for the Board of Education (BOE), which is about half of the Town overall budget. While student enrollment declines throughout the state, including Greenwich, the BOE wanted a 4-million-dollar increase from last year's budget. We're still having trouble seeing why such an increase when student enrollment is down. The BOE and Superintendent Dr. Toni Jones didn't get exactly what it wanted which cause Dr. Jones to make some changes in the start/end times of the public schools and a new bus company, which became a bit chaotic. A perfect example of what out of control spending looks like.
On the other hand, are a segment of Republicans, who do everything possible to appease Democrats every chance they get. Harry Fisher, Chair of the BET, is a perfect example. He votes with Democrats just about every time. This was the price of his Chairmanship. It appears being fiscally conservative has become irrelevant to him and other so-called Republicans of the establishment. First Selectman Fred Camillo is actively engaged in getting these establishment individuals to not only win in the Republican BET primary today, but to get them voted onto the Board in November.
Greenwich does not need or deserve this so-called "bipartisan" venture. This will lead to more out of control spending and higher taxes. What we do need are fiscally responsible individuals to use wise judgement with our tax dollars. This is not an ideology and to say it is, is ridiculous. This just makes sense. The establishment Republicans serve one purpose: essentially to rubber stamp the Democrat agenda based on emotions rather than facts. Greenwich does not need individuals like this on the Board. The BET is not a country club. It's serious business. We need serious members who will keep the Town Budget in check.
GVAT members will be heading to their polling locations today to support six fiscally responsible individuals so we can continue to make Greenwich a great place to be. We hope you will join us on this primary day as we support Republicans David Alfano, Nisha Arora, Lucia Jansen, Alessandra Brus, Philip Dodson and John Hopely.
